I'm a social and moral psychologist trying to better understand the outer limits of human cooperation and prosocial behavior. In particular, my research maps the cognitive, affective, and moral architecture of exceptional altruism, often with the goal of applying these insights to help inspire real-world action.

I strive in much of my work to apply findings directly toward solutions to global challenges. I'm also fascinated by the fundamental substance of human experience — and by how much it differs from person to person. In that vein, I strive in some of my work to better understand how humans contemplate big questions. Questions about right and wrong, fact and fiction, and what it means to live well, to be part of a group, and to exist at a particular place in time.

Part of what motivates this curiosity is the possibility that these basic features of human experience matter for altruism too. How people understand themselves, their relationships to others, and their place in time may shape who they feel connected to, responsible for, and willing to help. I hope that studying these questions can offer a more complete understanding of how we might better meet the demands of an increasingly interconnected world, where many challenges affect people far beyond our immediate lives.

Prior to directing the MAP Lab, I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the IDEA Lab at ASU and in The Morality Lab at Boston College. Before that, I earned my PhD in the Imagination & Morality Lab at SUNY Albany.
